Game Designers Track

How to Make Gamers Feel Like Heroes - Monday 3pm-4pm
Hosted by Jeff Tidball

Great storytellers know a lot about structuring stories. Three-act structures are common, well-understood, and (most importantly) emotionally effective. If you imagine that a player's experience of playing your game is like a story where the gamer is the protagonist, you can make design decisions that will weave compelling, emotionally involving gameplay experiences even for abstract games.

Playtest is Key - Monday 3-4pm
Hosted by Jason Bulmahn, Lead Designer at Paizo Publishing

A lecture talking about the pros and cons of a public playtest of a game. How to get the most out of it. How to deal with cheerleaders, detractors, and armchair designers. It will talk about analyzing data, playtest organization, and ensuring that your playtest is a useful tool and not just a marketing ploy.

Principles of Setting Design - Monday 4-5pm
Hosted by Kenneth Hite

The setting -- be it a whole galaxy or a single palace -- helps define your game. Setting constrains plot and defines character; it's what the designer brings to the table before anyone else sits down. This seminar takes setting design down to its fundamentals, and builds up from there.

So How Much Do I Get? - Monday 6-7pm
Hosted by Mike Selinker, President of Lone Shark Games and Designer of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

Mike Selinker talks about the economics of being a designer in this new age of studios and Kickstarters. As president of Lone Shark Games and designer of games like the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Mike has been on both sides of the negotiating table. He'll describe different structures for ownership and royalties, risk assessment, and contract details -- good knowledge for designers and publishers alike.

Top Tips for Better Game Writing - Monday 4-5pm
Hosted by Jeff Tidball

There's a lot of text in a tabletop game design. Even aggressively language-less designs are communicated through rulebooks composed of written words. In this presentation we'll mock bad writing, identify sensible writing techniques for game designers, and make the way you communicate your game design measurably better in just an hour.
